Rare Books, Manuscripts & Newspaper Scanning

Transworld Digital can scan virtually any book, manuscript or newspaper to a very high quality. Using Purup or unique Digibook TM technology books of almost unlimited size can be scanned without resulting in any damage to the book/manuscript/newspaper. TWD can scan books in binary (black and white), greyscale and colour, as tiffs or jpegs.

All TWD scanners are fitted with specially designed book cradles, which compensate for the thickness of book. The book is scanned on the cradle as if it is open to be
read, and any page curvature can be corrected using our specialist graphical software. Our scanners also have a facility to scan with the book open at 120 degrees, designed for those books with stiff and fragile spines.

The digitised pages can then be used to reproduce facsimile copies, archiving and indexing, or just stored somewhere safe on DVD or CD.

Although now heavily involved in the development of computerised archives for both public and private sector customers, the company's reputation was built on the pre-press division of the printing industry. We are experts in the printing of older books and manuscripts for the press, and a number of UK book printers now rely on our specialist skills in this area.

TWD are often called upon clean, enhance and re-set older editions of printed books, or preserve images from deteriorating film stock or crumbling manuscripts.
Normally this will involve preserving the appearance of the original edition - whilst removing any obvious blemishes such as stains or discolouring due to age, prior to reprint.

Where a paper archive or reels of film are to be digitised in the original format, we might be asked to add an index or key, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. However, when required (and within the limits imposed by the original material), we have the capability - for instance - to reset the pages of an eighteenth century book and make them as legible as when they were first printed; or to make a modern edition of Dickens novel resemble one the author himself might have leafed through.

At TWD, we listen to our customers and tailor our skills to their requirements in each and every case.
